Business Analysis and most overlooked skills

I may be a business analyst by profession, but my learning will never stop. Everyday, I learn something new which helps me grow both professionally as well as personally.

There are thousands and thousands of articles on the skills a Business Analyst (BA) should have etc. The best and most compiled book that I would recommend to everyone is International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA)'s A Guide to the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge® (BABOK® Guide) (link is provided below)

This guidebook covers everything is great detail and is easy to understand. There are still some skills (in my opinion that are over-looked by people) and these skills include those referred to as soft skills (some like to call them professional skills):

  • Communications both written and oral
  • Problem Solving - Analytical Thinking
  • Systems Thinking
  • Business Knowledge - practices and principals
  • Knowledge of information technology structures, data base structures etc.
  • Leadership
  • Creativity

Other skills:
  • Process modelling
  • Data modelling
  • Wireframing
  • User Experience designs (UX)
  • Use Cases (other UML models)
  • Knowledge of software development life-cycles
  • Meeting Management

One cannot expect to learn all these skills at once, it takes time, patience, and exposure/experience to learn and perfect all of them. And once you perfect them, you can then call yourself a master BA 😊
